Important Update: In August 2021, Verizon is progressively rolling out new firmware of the G3100 with a new UI. Some of these instructions have changed, I have included both the v2 and v3 firmware instructions in case your G3100 is not yet running the latest software.
I have owned the Verizon G3100 almost since it came out. You can read my user review of the Verizon G3100 if you want to better understand my experience. A fixed IP address or static IP address is often recommended for smart home equipment. If you have a Nest Thermostat, a Ring Doorbell, Smart Switches, Raspberry Pi (including PiHole), or anything really that you may want to connect to consistently or remotely, then it’s always better to set a static IP address.
Assumption
I am assuming the device you need to use a static IP address with is already connected to your WiFi. I really recommend you do this first, it’s a lot easier to set up. It also means you can be confident your WiFi is working on the device before you set the static IP address. So I recommend making sure you have the device working on your network first before you proceed any further.
Important – 10 Static IP Address Limit on Verizon G3100
Important For some reason, the Verizon G3100 only supports 10, yes 10, static IP addresses. I’m not sure why it just does. It’s frustrating, it’s definitely a Verizon firmware issue. So for now, I hope you don’t need more than 10 static IP addresses. I am hoping Verizon fix this at some point in the future.
Before you Begin
Look at the back of your Verizon G3100 router and note down the admin password to log in to the web interface. I’d recommend taking a photo, just to avoid accidentally missing something or making a mistake on a letter and spending a few frustrating minutes not able to log in. Keep in mind you want the Admin password, not the WiFi password.
Instructions on how to Set a Static IP Address on the Verizon G3100
I have capitalized the text so it’s easier to read, but the website address will be in lower case (don’t worry, it’s safe).
Tip: If you encounter any problems, check you are using the Admin password (not WiFi) and click Show Password to make sure you didn’t make a typo.
If your Verizon G3100 is using the new v3.x firmware:
Then continue from Step 7, under the Note below.
If your Verizon G3100 is using the (old) v2.x firmware:
Then continue from Step 7, under the Note below.
Note – The next steps apply to all G3100 firmware versions
Note: The G3100 will now list every device connected to your network. Sometimes the names are not intuitive, you can customize the device name when you set the Static IP address. If you don’t know what device you are looking for, then you should be able to find the current IP address in the software or app for the device. Sorry, I can’t give more help beyond that, as every device has a different way of finding the current IP address or device naming convention.
Tip. Don’t customize the IP address. I know it’s tempting to change the IP address so it’s easier to remember, but you risk conflicting with something else on your network. Or having to restart the device you set up. There are really all sorts of headaches you can cause by changing the IP address that is best avoided. If you really want to set a custom static IP address on your G3100, check every IP address first to avoid a conflict.
Tip: There’s some weird bug in the G3100 that if you set a Static IP address for a device already in the list it will give you an error. The error seems to occur at random. Also, this is a hostname error not an IP address conflict error.
You are all done! You have successfully set a Static IP or Fixed IP Address on the Verizon G3100 Mesh Router.
If you were doing this as part of the setup of a PiHole, you may want to read how my guide on how to change the DNS Gateway Server used by the Verizon G3100.
Hope this helps!
