Below, drivers can find must-have information on license renewal including pricing and documentation needed for the renewal process.
There are two options for renewing your driver license:
An ND Driver License Site will be ready to accept your confirmation number which you will receive once your appointment has been confirmed. Please remember to bring your confirmation number.
You may choose to renew your driver license up to 10 months prior to the date of expiration. You will not lose any time on the license if you opt to renew it early.
Federal Motor Carrier Safety regulations require all Commercial Driver License (CDL) drivers to present proof of citizenship, lawful permanent residence, or legal presence (temporary status), and proof of North Dakota residence address (place of domicile).
When you come in to renew your license you will need to show the Driver License Examiner at least one of the Proof of Citizenship, Lawful Permanent Residence, or Legal Presence documents listed below, your North Dakota CDL license, and at least one of the Proof of North Dakota Residence Address (place of domicile) documents listed below.
Documents Accepted as Proof of Citizenship, Lawful Permanent Residence, or Legal Presence in the United States:
Note: No photocopies. No hospital certificates. All documents must be original or certified copies only.
Documents Accepted as Proof of North Dakota Residence Address:
Note: All documents must contain your name and physical residence address. Post Office boxes are not acceptable for residence address.
Your driving privileges are no longer valid after midnight of your birthday, so you would not be legal to operate a motor vehicle as of that point. However, no retesting will be required to renew unless your license has been expired for more than one year. If the license has been expired more than one year, you will be required to pass both a knowledge and road test prior to becoming relicensed.
